Moving in Minnesota? Protect your household and wallet by learning the common red flags and the exact questions to ask before you hire a mover. This guide explains the most frequent scams, verification steps, and a 10‑question checklist to use when vetting movers.

Common moving scams to watch for

Lowball estimates and bait‑and‑switch: Scammers quote a very low price over the phone, then demand much more at delivery. Get a binding written estimate to avoid surprises.

Hostage loads and sudden price hikes: Some dishonest carriers will hold your goods and demand extra payment to release them. Never pay large cash sums to release belongings, and be particularly diligent when scheduling long-distance moves.

Fake companies and identity theft: Fraudsters create convincing websites or use stolen identities; unmarked trucks and generic email addresses are red flags. Verify credentials before booking.

Red flags and verification steps

10 essential questions to ask any mover

  1. Are you licensed for interstate moves (USDOT/MC)? Please provide the numbers.
  2. Is this a binding estimate or an estimate subject to change?
  3. What valuation/insurance options do you offer? (Get details in writing.)
  4. Do you require a deposit? If so, how much and by what payment methods?
  5. What is your pickup and delivery window?
  6. How do you handle specialty items (pianos, safes, artwork)?
  7. Can you provide local references or recent customer reviews?
  8. Who is my on‑site contact on moving day?
  9. What is your damage claims process and timeline?
  10. Do you subcontract any work, and how are subcontractors vetted?

What to do if you suspect fraud

Document everything (photos, contracts, receipts), refuse additional cash demands, and contact the FMCSA or your state attorney general to file a complaint. If you paid by card, contact your bank to dispute unauthorized charges.
