In 1962, the Chicago River was dyed for the first time, thanks to a suggestion from the local plumbers' union! The green was such a hit that the tradition continues to this day, although the 1960s formula was quickly changed to a super secret, environmentally friendly vegetable-based recipe. ​​Chicago St. Patrick's Day celebrations are renowned for their vitality and traditions. Here's what you need to know about events this year. The Dyeing of the Chicago River. This year, the dyeing ceremony will happen at 12:15 pm on March 16th between State and Columbus. To get a good spot, scope out places on the Chicago Riverwalk around those streets or on the nearby bridges. Want to see the river up close? You can book a River Cruise. But the green only lasts for a few hours so you’ll want to book it between 12:00-3:00. Chicago St Patrick's Day Parade 2024. After the dyeing is done, the parade will begin with Irish dancers, bagpipers, colorful floats, and community groups. The parade takes place on Columbus Drive between Balbo and Monroe Drive. The South Side Parade. In addition to the downtown parade, the South Side Irish Parade is known for its community-oriented atmosphere and neighborhood feel.
