As soon as you tell your friends and family you're planning a move, they'll likely ask you where your new place is. What they aren't likely to ask is when your move date is. But maybe they should. Planning a move is a big endeavor, from closing on your new home, to packing, notifying people of your change of address, and more. Selecting your move date and time may seem like an inconsequential detail in all of that, but it can make a huge difference in how smoothly your move goes. There are a lot of factors that go into pinning down a move date that works for you. Here are some general tips and guidelines to help you plan your Minneapolis move — and maybe even save you some money along the way. This one you might not have as much control over, so it really depends on you and your needs. If you're locked into a lease that isn't up until July, chances are you'll be moving in July. If you're selling your current home, how long it takes to sell depends on the current market. However, the peak moving season is May through September, so if you can swing a move in October through April you could potentially save a fair amount of money. The first and last weeks of each month are the busiest for moving because many people are signing new leases and need to be out of their old place by a certain day. If you are moving to a new home, you may have a bit more flexibility when choosing the time of month you move. Mid-month is the slowest time for moving, so you are likely to be able to score a discount on your move if you're willing to move at this time. Most people choose to move on the weekend (Friday through Sunday) to avoid taking time off work and/or school. That means weekdays (Monday through Thursday) are actually the best days to move to a new house because movers are usually booked solid on those coveted days. Moving rates might be lower on weekdays. If you don't see lower rates posted, ask your movers if you can get any sort of discount for picking a less busy day. The morning (roughly 8am to 10am) is when your movers and you will be the freshest, especially in warmer months when the heat is building throughout the day. Getting an earlier start means you'll be done earlier as well and able to start getting settled in and unpacking. Planning a move in the Twin Cities?
