Did you know?

Lakeland was settled in 1839 and organized on October 20th of 1858. This small but beautiful city was noted for its beautiful lake views, large and expansive woods, and its proximity to the St. Croix River. The river proved to be one of the main portions of transportation for the small town as it expanded throughout the years. In 1854, Freeman C. Tyler came to the area and operated the Shanghai Mill, named after the large Shanghai chickens he raised there. Most notably, Lakeland was a popular stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Pacific Railroad. Lakeland is also home to a number of beautiful historic sites including the Captain John Oliver House, the Mitchell Jackson Farmhouse, and the John T. Cyphers House, which are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
