There’s no better way to explore Minnesota than to hop in the car with a full tank of gas and set off on a road trip adventure. Let our guide to the best road trips in Minnesota inspire you to hit the open road this summer and soak up The Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Best Northern Minnesota Road Trips

North Shore Scenic Drive

This iconic Minnesota road trip is one of the best ways to explore the northern part of the state. This drive along Highway 61 and the shores of Lake Superior north of Duluth will connect you to popular sites such as Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, and more. Don’t miss stops at Minnesota state parks like Tettegouche State Park.

Duluth

While you’re exploring far northern Minnesota, extend your road trip south to the port city of Duluth. There are plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the city—an aquarium and a large railroad museum. Spend time in the Canal Park area to watch the ships come in. Then head up to the Skyline Parkway scenic byway, a must for any Minnesota road trip.

Itasca State Park

You can’t explore Minnesota without checking the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River off your list. Itasca State Park is the oldest state park in Minnesota and a Natural National Landmark. Head to this Minnesota road trip destination for camping or simply enjoying the 32,000 acres of nature.

Best Central Minnesota Road Trips

Alexandria

For a shorter Minnesota road trip from the Twin Cities area, look to Alexandria. Just two hours from Minneapolis, Alexandria boasts plenty of lake day activities like boating, fishing, and dining. Oh, add Carlos Creek Winery and Copper Trail Brewing Company to your list of stops if that’s your thing!

Great River Road

This 565-mile Minnesota road trip lets you explore communities along the Mississippi River. In central Minnesota, this scenic byway will lead you through Little Falls, once the home of aviator Charles Lindbergh. Check out the Minnesota Fishing Museum & Hall of Fame before heading to St. Cloud for a self-guided Riverwalk history tour

Best Southern Minnesota Road Trips

Lanesboro

Small-town charm makes Lanesboro one of the best road trips in Minnesota. Bikers of all skill levels love exploring Minnesota on two wheels on the 60-mile Root River Bike Trail that passes through town. Enjoy shopping or an ice cream treat in the quaint downtown area or get adventurous and kayak down the Root River.

New Ulm

The quaint town of New Ulm is perfect if you only have a day to spare. You’ll see many German influences in this charming city, including the 102-foot Hermann the German monument, specialty items at downtown restaurants, and brews on tap at historic Schell’s Brewery. Flandrau State Park is an excellent Minnesota state park for hiking and even offers a sand-bottom swimming pool for the kids.
