One of the biggest sources of stress when moving homes is the fear of damage to your valuables. For many people, their computer is one of their most costly possessions. However, not only are these machines financially important to us, they often contain priceless pictures, documents, and data. That is why it’s paramount you take the right steps in order to properly protect your computer and accessories during the entirety of your move. Here are eight helpful tips to do just that The most fragile part of a computer is the hard disk. Although it is rather easy for a technician to replace a hard disk, recreating the data you have stored on the disk is very difficult – and sometimes even impossible. The most important rule of using a computer, regardless of whether or not it’s about to be moved, is to make sure you have at least two copies of all data and documents you feel are of value. You can copy files from the hard disk to a zip drive, burn to a CD, or back up to a cloud storage service. If you choose to make physical copies, be sure they are all clearly labeled. Always conduct a full backup of data directories before you move. It is possible to recreate programs from the original program disks, although printer drivers, default directories, and any preferences will have to be re-selected, and macros or setup files may need extensive work to recreate. If the system unit is bolted to a table, unbolt it for transport. Some personal computers have keys to lock the cover of the system unit. Lock the unit and remove the key. Make sure you place the key where you can easily locate it. You should also consider using a new security device in your new location. Before attempting to take your system apart, make sure all power switches are turned OFF. This is especially important if you use a power strip with an on/off switch and normally leave the individual component switches ON. Make sure you write down serial numbers for each piece of equipment. Using mailing labels or “invisible” tape, label both ends of the cables, describing where the cable is attached and which piece of equipment it serves. On a separate piece of paper, describe the cables and how they are connected, in case the labels come off in transport. You may need a small screwdriver to remove the cables. Cables permanently attached to the monitor or external disk drive can simply be fastened to the device with masking tape. Remove toner cartridges from laser printers and put them in their own box, because once a toner cartridge has been used, toner can spill out. Remove font cartridges, all paper trays, and other plastic parts extending from the body of the printer. On dot-matrix printers, tie the print heads of the printers to one side. Use masking tape to hold the plastic covers in place. If you still have the original boxes for anything, use them instead of generic packing boxes. Pack the keyboard, user manuals, backup disks, and mouse in another box and label it as well. Double tape the boxes to ensure they don’t break open and further label your boxes as “Fragile” or “Important.” Consider moving these boxes yourself if you can. Don’t forget to call your service provider and disconnect any existing internet service or browser lines (Cable, DSL, etc.). If you’re sticking with the same provider at your new place, make them aware of your move to avoid any disruption in service. Make sure to arrange your new internet service at least two weeks in advance.
