  • How do I know how many boxes I’ll need?

You’ll almost always need more than you think.  It’s better to have too many; this way, you can return the unused ones (if from a moving company) or recycle or throw them away.

  • Where can I find boxes?

AAA Movers provides sturdy boxes free of charge for movers.  Other places you can look are grocery or other stores and companies.  Ask around.  Friends and family might have ideas or know of a place.

  • Other than boxes, what else will I need to pack?

Plastic packing tape, unprinted newspaper (the printing can stain items), packing paper, or bubble-wrap, markers to label, and a notebook and pen to inventory items in boxes.

  • How can I make sure the right boxes go to the right room?

Some ideas are by careful labeling that corresponds to an inventory list or by color coding stickers on boxes with stickers on room doors.

  • What can I pack ahead of time?

Things like clothing from the opposite season, non-essential kitchen utensils, garbage cans (use bags at the end and pack in the cans!), extra TVs and radios, and extra cosmetics (use travel sized at the end).  Pack as much as you can ahead so that you have less to do when you need to actually begin moving.

  • Where should I pack important valuables or documents?

If you have enough room, keep these things with you in the car.  If not, pack valuables buried inside a miscellaneous box and make sure to check on how these items are covered by insurance in case something happens.  Always keep papers like bills, birth certificates, new job contacts, realtor information, and closing papers with you during the move.

  • How do I change my residency when moving from one state to another?

The easiest way is to go to the post office and fill out a change of address form.  To change your driver’s license and register your car in the new state, you’ll need to go to the DMV in the new state.
